This is your life…well, your year anyway

As we approach the end of 2012 (where did the year go?!), and before deciding what you want from next year, it’s a useful idea to carry out a brief review of what happened over the last 12 months.

Up and down and round and round…

If you are like most people, then the year will have had its high points, some not-so-high points and all those moments in between.

And often people (not you because you’re reading this) just turn up to their lives and go through each day pretty much like the one before. And it’s a bit late on your death bed to wonder what happened to your life.

So take a few minutes to review 2012 before asking what you want to do, get and achieve in 2013.

Reviewing your year

In your head or on paper consider these questions:

i) What went well over the last 12 months; what am I most proud/pleased about? What things did I do that made me happiest?

ii) How can I get more of those things that made me feel best in 2013?

iii) What could have gone better over the last 12 months? What did/didn’t I do that contributed to that?

iv) What can I do differently next year to make sure that I get less of those things that didn’t make me feel so good?

v) What would make 2013 the best year of my life so far? What would I need to do, learn, be to get that? What would my big goals be? What would I do differently with my health and time and interests, work, relationships and friendships?

vi) Imagine it’s a year from now and you are reviewing all that happened in 2013. As you look back, what successes are you most aware of? Which make you feel the best as you imagine having completed them?

vii) What’s the smallest first step you can take towards moving things in the direction you want to go to make sure you complete what you want to during the year? When are you going to do it?

Momentum

On a piece of paper write down your goals for 2013 – even if you don’t know quite how you will achieve them yet, write them down anyway. Only include those things that when you think of completing them, they make you feel really good inside.

Turn the paper over; on the other side create a table with your goals down one side and the days of the week across the top. Because:

All you have to do if you want to succeed is this:

Every day take one small step that moves you closer to succeeding with your goal. It can be the very smallest step you can imagine – sending an e-mail, making a call, reading a website – yet do one small thing EVERY day.

And every day place a tick on your piece of paper that confirms you have taken that step.

When will you find the time to make sure 2013 is your best year yet?

Knowing you only need 10-15mins to do it, when will you do it? Or would you rather wait until this time next year and wonder where the year went?

Wishing you all an amazing Christmas and Happy New Year!
